Special: Top Three Reviews of the Year 2013 (Megan)

I love MySF Short Short Reviews because it’s an all inclusive place for all things geek. I can review almost anything I want, and discover new gems all the time. Writing reviews myself has been more difficult than I initially thought. While it’s very liberating to have a place to voice all the knowledge and opinions I have about the stories I love, I’ve discovered that sitting down and writing a coherent and helpful review takes a lot of thought and time. I’m enjoying the challenge of publishing reviews that are interesting enough to spark discussion. My new position as a reviewer has also been a great excuse to keep watching, reading, thinking and writing.

I appreciate my fellow reviewers for having such good taste, giving me good reviews to read, and allowing me to be a part of this awesome site. The reviews listed are in alphabetical order by the reviewer’s name.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

Cover of "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time".This was one of the first reviews I ever read on the site, and did so because I had recently purchased this beloved film. It was exciting reading Douglas’ review because I had no idea The Girl Who Leapt Through Time was based on a book, or that there were a number of television series, live action films, and a manga based around this story. The story I thought I knew suddenly became universally bigger than I ever thought.

I agree with him that the film is a quality anime production, and although the time travel has some discrepancies, the film is still enjoyable because of the great character development, especially the main character, Makoto. She’s so likable and sympathetic, it makes the film stand up to multiple viewings.

The Star Wars Craft Book by Bonnie Burton

Cover of "The Star Wars Craft Book" by Bonnie Burton.I love that Heather thought to review a craft book. I wouldn’t have ever thought of that. It was such a fun idea and highlights what makes this site great: anything awesome, even The Star Wars Craft Book, can have a little spotlight.

She wrote a very helpful review, giving us a taste of some of the cooler projects included, like the R2D2 beanie and the Wookie puppet. It was so helpful for her to mention that most of the projects are child friendly, can be finished in an afternoon, and include helpful step-by-step pictures and patterns. It sounds like a really useful fun book, and is now on my list of things I could gift to one of my craftier geek friends.

Wreck-It Ralph

Poster for Disney's animated film "Wreck-It Ralph".When I first saw Wreck-it Ralph, I loved it so much, I wanted to review it immediately. I was a little sad to discover that Joe had beaten me to it, but as I read his review, I relaxed, because he said everything about it that needed to be said.

I agree with him that it was a high quality production with a top notch story. The film is packed front to back with nostalgic video game references, and music and script to match. I’m so glad Joe gave the brilliant short film Paperman a nod as well. Both films are just plain entertaining, and are truly two of the best productions of 2012.
